Our second stop on our SW CO road trip was Durango. We had been there many, many years ago with my parents. There is a famous train ride there that goes from Durango to Silverton and back. It's a narrow gauge railway with a coal burning steam engine. We took that train ride with my parents, which was great fun. Also nearby is Mesa Verde, an Anasazi ancient cliff dwelling park that is also very interesting. Since we had seen both, we decided to just explore Durango itself. The full day we were there we took a very walk along the Animas River and then back along a historic area with very old homes. It was a beautiful day for a walk. If any of you visit Durango, we highly recommend a restaurant called Ken and Sues. It was right across the street from our hotel, the Strater Hotel. We went there the first night, on our friend Kathi's recommendation. We liked it so much we went back the second night. Great fresh food, nice service, and modern ambiance. The Strater Hotel is a very historic hotel, built in the late 1800's. We would also recommend staying there, as it's right downtown and close to everything.
